A genuine "multiple -original" limited edition print is a design conceived by the artist for the expressed purpose of making an original print or impression by cutting, creating, or stenciling an image directly into a block, plate , stone, or other material (called matrix) and individually printing (hand-pulling) each impression in a limited edition of like multiples. Each impression (or proof) is considered an original, unique image, not a copy in the sense of a photo-mechanical reproduction or xerox. Much care is given to making each impression in the edition meet a uniform standard of quality, but subtle differences will occur from one impression to the next- a hallmark of a truly hand printed multiple! Attention is also given to using archival materials- (inks, papers etc.)- to assure print longevity and quality. In some cases, as noted, hand made or other kinds of special papers are used.
This first grouping of prints dates mostly from the 1970's please click on thumbnails for larger views |
