This is an original poster by
the well known French painter Vertes to announce an exhibition
of his ceramic work at Atelier Tapis Vert in Vallauris, France,
the famous pottery center near Cannes where Picasso created his
ceramics after World War II. Vertes was closely aligned with
Claire and Rene Batigne who were the owners of Tapis Vert. Also
associated with the studio were Bemelmans, Ozenfant, and Prinner,
leading French artists of their day as was Vertes. The linocut
image was cut by Vertes and letterpress printed in Cannes for
the May/June 1957 exhibit.
It was printed in the same shop that
printed at least one earlier Picasso ceramic exhibit poster in
1948. The colors are black and green on off-white paper which
measures 11" x 17. A variation was also printed in black
without the green copy, perhaps trial prints for the finished
version. This particular example is in very good condition, apparently
never displayed and well kept. Provenance is available.
